Regarding the first two points:

The characters made active by frenchb (; : ! ?) may perturb some extensions, including xypic,xcolor, arabtex -- see in section 5 how to solve this problem. As a rule, ":" is better avoided inside \label, use dashes "-" instead as a safety measure. In addition, the presence of a ":" in a \label may yield errors when the listings package is used -- load listings after babel to make the problem disappear.

The characters ; : ! ? are only made active at \begin{document}, implying that the expected spaces are not added automatically when these characters are used in commands defined in the preamble or in .sty files.

Example: the command \title{Quelle crise?} put in the preamble will typeset to "Quelle crise?" (without space) when \maketitle is called. There are several remedies:

- Either put \title{Quelle crise?} after \begin{document} (and before \maketitle).

- Or put commands such as \title between shorthandon{;:!?} (before) and \shorthandoff{;:!?} (after), in case you insist in keeping them in the preamble.


The three remaining points deal with the effect of frencb on lists, the redefinition of \part and the interaction with the footmisc package.
