[texworks] Mac OS X menu keyboard shortcuts also insert characters or move cursor

I am using TeXworks version 0.1 (r400) on Mac OS X 10.5.8

When I hit Ctrl+F2 to activate the application menu and then hit  F to  
give the File menu focus,
an f is inserted in the currently active file at the current cursor  
position.

When I then press the down arrow key to pull down the File menu, the  
cursor also moves down in the currently open file.
