It also seems to be a sort of de-facto standard for getting out of  
full-screen mode. While there are a variety of shortcuts for moving to  
full screen (Cmd-F in iTunes and DVD Player, Cmd-Shift-F in Preview,  
no shortcut in Acrobat, Cmd-Alt-U in Pages, Cmd-Alt-P in Keynote, Cmd- 
Return in PowerPoint, and so forth), Esc seems to always work for  
leaving full screen.
