Of course, one can always add

%& --enable-write18 % or --shell-escape if not using MiKTeX!

to the first line of the source.  But that is not really a new user feature!

One other thing:

5) BibTeX.  Should the default be "bibtex8 --wolfgang", rather than just
"bibtex"?
