You can’t update from the distribution-supplied packages to something new you find on CTAN without some headaches. Generally if you are wanting to be on the cutting edge of CTAN you want to make a vanilla install of TeX Live rather than use what is provided by Debian and Ubuntu. I tried doing this with xypic and followed the installation directions included in the zip file from CTAN's site. I was partially successful but I got problems with FTM (I think this was fonts metric) part. I get error messages. I am able to latex a file and I get some results but arrows do not appear in the diagrams.
