trouble installing a new MacTeX distribution

Incidentally, TeX Live Utility has the ability to switch distributions, and that might solve your problem. In the program's Configure menu, choose "Change Default TeX Live Version." TLU utility should list all available distributions and allow you to pick the active one.

This will work unless the old Preference Pane damaged the data structure. Try this method. If it fails, please write me directly.
