Indeed the following seems to work with both lualatex and xelatex:

\defaultfontfeatures{
   Ligatures = TeX ,
   Extension = .otf }
\setmainfont
  [UprightFont = *rm,
   ItalicFont =  *ti,
   BoldFont = *bx,
   BoldItalicFont = *bi]
  {cmuno}
