I'm not sure this link was appreciated but it captures most
of my interest except for dealing with visibility,

In my current case, I had an email of literature updates from pubmed.
Each entry contains a title, citation, abstract, and authors.
The specials create dvi that can recognize the groups and a modified
viewer allows you to show or hide groups. For example, you may get
the emails with all these fields but just want the titles first.
The macros number the blocks in order they occur and you get as
was suggested for paragraphs in legal documents a number for each citable
thingy. Then, you may want to make an adhoc collection of abstracts
visible. And then maybe send this curated stuff to someone with out
a bunch of copy/paste- just copy the stuff you made visible.

Of course for actual printing you need a page size but that
is determined by the printer just like a window size or something.

I guess my usage is different- I'm trying to organize largely text
information. The suggestion that a font is something other than 
a look up table between a byte and a 5x7 bit map is too compilcated :)

But even in books, reference works, tech, or romance novels, I'd imagine
you may want some way to browser other than flipping pages. Not sure
this works here but maybe someone has dealt with it.
