Another way to proceed is to use the Unix install method for TeX Live, described on the TUG web pages, since TeX Live actually has two sets of binaries, x86_64-darwin requiring at least El Capitan and x86_64-darwinlegacy, which should work on Snow Leopard and above. Using this installer, you can select an "install scheme". The default one gives the full TeX Live, and the "small scheme" gives BasicTeX.

Note that TUG will release TeX Live 2019 fairly soon.
