VMs help you to *save* time.  Phil wasted time because he *didn't*
use one for the update already.  It would have been so easy to revert
to the latest snapshot.  VMs have a lot of advantages and there is
absolutely no reason to avoid them.  It might take some time to
install them but this time is definitely not wasted.
