I suspect you found my web page
(http://alum.mit.edu/www/toms/latex.html) which contains a lot of
infomration about using LaTeX - and it can be overwhelming.

The best source for all things tex is:

The TeX Users Group web site
http://tug.org/

You should be able to download LaTeX from there.

However, I suspect that Ubuntu may already have LaTex.  If not,
google:
latex on ubuntu
picks up a bunch of pages.

I'm ccing this to TeXHaX which is a news group with experts who can
help you more than I.
