[texhax] using lineno.sty with latex

This message is typical for typing errors in the document preamble ... or 
in a loaded package ... One should guess here that you have a broken 
version of lineno.sty ... but I wonder how this could have happened ... but 
that also is why I asked for your .log file which could tell me about the 
version of lineno.sty you are trying.
