An upright d is listed as the notation for the total differential by
the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) -- see

   http://www-v2.sp.se/metrology/IUPAP_SUNAMCO/IUPAP SUNAMCO
Commission_files/IUPAP_Red_book_1987/SUNAMCO Red book
1987/index_red_book_iupap_sunamco_1987.htm

or google on   iupap units

This always seemed reasonable to me since it makes an equation like
     dd = vdt
more readable.
Cheers,
