    *  \; - a thick space
    * \: - a medium space
    * \, - a thin space
    * \! - a negative thin space 

Maybe a little bedtime manual reading would be a useful investment; for
example, the (17-page) Short Math Guide for LATEX by Michael Downes of the
American Mathematical Society or (a little weightier) The Not So Short
Introduction to LATEX2ε.
