It would be better if you put in your preamble \usepackage[T1] 
{fontenc} (see lshort pp. 81 and ff.).

Also, I would advice you to use \usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}, *not*  
utf8x, as lshort (p. 26) says. But your editor has to be able to use  
utf8; for MikTeX, your choice would be TeXmaker:
