[texhax] How to get Computer Modern embedded as postscript font? (was: Very pale brightness with Adobe Reader print)

In LaTeX, if you put \usepackage[T1]{fontenc}, Computer Modern gets embedded as
a  postscript font, so it should print fine using  Acrobat.

Can anyone suggest how to get the same result in plain TeX?
