Shouldn't this be ".tfm"?  I don't think TeX understands .afm's (Adobe
Font Metric files), at least not the "vanilla" TeX.  In fact, there's
an afm2tfm program (written by Tomas Rokicki and Donald E. Knuth).

There is a mapping in some font map file which maps "Helvetica" to
the "real" font name.
