I can't help with Musi[cx]TeX (sorry), but I can recommend GNU Lilypond
for music typesetting, http://lilypond.org -- if you're on some
variant of Unix.  I don't believe it runs on Windows.

(Lilypond does actually use TeX as the typesetting backend, although this
is invisible to users -- at least after installation.)
