[texhax] Embedding Type 1 fonts with dvips and ps2pdf (OT?)

Greetings,

This is most likely off-topic for this mailing list, and I apologize, but
I have not been able to find any other information, neither in FAQs nor in
any mailing list archives. Perhaps someone here can point me in the right
direction, since I can imagine other TeX users having had the same
problem.

The problem I have is embedding Type 1 fonts from a CTAN LaTeX package
(TIPA, providing phonetic alphabet macros and fonts) into a PDF file using
dvips and ps2pdf. I have set up the package so that the Type 1 fonts are
present and can be found by kpathsea. dvips is instructed in both
config.ps and config.pdf to include the .map file (p +tipa.map)

Compiling a test document (in my case, the TIPA manual itself) works fine,
and embeds the fonts, using pdflatex; Acrobat Reader lists these as
"embedded Type 1". The .dvi file and the .ps file, generated with latex
and dvips, also include these fonts, though I cannot tell how. ps2pdf (any
version), however, will not embed these. There is a noticable size
difference between PDF files generated from pdflatex and ps2pdf.

Is there a gs switch, or a configuration file entry, that I might be
missing? I will be happy to provide extra information, but I do not yet
know what might be relevant.

Thanks in advance,

  Benjamin Deutsch
