[texhax] (La)TeX syntax

Hi,

Where can I find good documentation on the syntax of (La)TeX? I want to
know what characters end a command, which character sequences are ignored
(such as multiple whitespaces), whether or not something like
\input
	{file}
is allowed or not.

I'm developing a LaTeX editor, Kile, for KDE (Linux), so that's why I'm
interested.
