Thanks for this demo. You are right that there are some issues with<br>
spaces. I've took a look at their support in tex4ht and found that<br>
there is no support for \:, \! or \; in tex4ht sources. So I've added<br>
them.  The widths of corresponding <mspace> elements is based on<br>
fractions on this page:<br>

The \quad should really be 1em, but \ should be much smaller than it<br>
