My name is Susan Jolly and I am the person who originally got Eitan Gurari
interested in braille back in 2000. I am a sighted retired computational
scientist and became interested in braille after my retirement because it
had been a hobby of my father's. Because of my background in science and
math, my main interest is in braille math. Eitan was working on forward
translation of print, especially math, to braille, while I was
simultaneously developing software to translate from Nemeth braille math to
MathML. Although we communicated frequently via email, we unfortunately
never worked together on the same software. BTW, Eitan's children also sent
me his computer files but I was not able to recover any of his braille work.
I am very knowledgeable in English literary braille (having written both
forward and back translators) and Nemeth braille math (back translator only)
and can accurately proofread English and math braille, preferably in an
ASCII transliteration but also as simulated braille and with this email am
volunteering any help I can provide to the persons on this list who want to
support automated braille production.
Even though I do all my braille work as a volunteer, I would course need
institutional support in order to properly test and manage any software to
be released to the public. The following page describes a proposed alpha
test of my software and includes links to additional pages with detail about
my software. However, this project has been on hold since 2009.
Please feel free to communicate with me privately as well as on this list.
I am very happy to answer any questions about braille or braille software or
to at least point
you in the right direction.
