Absolutely stripped of everything non-essential. Here's the example (sorry, I
should have done this before).
==================================
\documentclass{article}
\begin{document}
\begin{eqnarray*}
a &=& ( A \\
&&\quad -\, B )
\end{eqnarray*}
\end{document}
==================================
Run plain latex on this to see, say, a PDF. It's very simple.
"mk4ht dbmlatex file.tex" bumps out with the error discussed.
"mk4ht dblatex file.tex" work fine. The equation is as in the LaTeX
output--split.
"mk4ht xhmlatex file.tex" works fine, but the equation is written on a single
line.
"mk4ht htlatex file.tex" works fine. The equation is as in the LaTeX
output--split.
"mk4ht oolatex file.tex" flags error and returns the same problem as "dbmlatex".
