I have never bothered to use Biber, although I am sure that it is good.
Try it without if it does not work.
I am working under OpenSUSE Linux.
Older versions of Biber are at
http://sourceforge.net/projects/biblatex-biber/files/biblatex-biber/
I use in my documents:
\usepackage[style=authoryear-comp,
hyperref=true,backref=false,backend=bibtex8,bibencoding=latin1]{biblatex}
\usepackage{hyperref}
\bibliography{../../../bibfilenamewithout.bib}
\hypersetup{breaklinks=true,colorlinks=true,bookmarksopen=true,
bookmarksnumbered=true,citecolor=blue}
