<p>There was no "rant", Christopher, simply a statement of fact. I
am an amateur photographer, because I am not paid for my work —
this is no way a pejorative statement, nor would anyone interpret
it as such, and it does not act as a barrier to being asked to act

<p>In just the same way, those who programme as a hobby rather than
as paid employment are amateur programmers — neither more, nor
less. This in no way devalues their work, which may well be as
good as, or even better than, professional work.<br>
