Folks,
It turns out I do have Catalina. It is on the same 2016
Intel machine (with a bad keyboard) used to build the Intel
binaries. Just now I installed TeXLive-2025 on it. The
install was incredibly slow. When it finally got to
running the post-install script, it took about 7 minutes to run.
But the installation installed, and typeset just fine.

Do people not realize that Apple's switch to Arm
was not a standard upgrade, but instead a turning
point in the history of the Mac? Why are we still
dealing with these old machines?
Long ago the Mac group decided to support all
versions of macOS still receiving regular updates:
namely the current macOS and the two previous
versions. Today that would be Ventura, Sonoma,
and Sequoia.
I am ashamed to admit that I was the one who backslid.
When it came time to drop Mojave, Herbert Schulz warned me
that keeping it would ultimately lead to trouble. But I
didn't listen. And now we're facing the consequences
of that misstep. Not just by one macOS, but by THREE:
Mojave, Catalina, and Big Sur. I'm confessing my sins,
but perhaps it is too late.
