Very odd pdfTeX output with tl2025

Well, a good night's sleep does no harm.

This is a matter of the journal style

(1) calling newtx.sty

(2) calling lineno.sty and using \runninglinenumbers

(3) changing the line number font and size with

\renewcommand{\linenumberfont}{\normalfont\fontsize{8}{10}\selectfont}

So it's a LaTeX issue after all, and one with a specific package at that.

What puzzles me is that this gives bad output only with TeX Live 2025.
