Broken installation?

I newly installed Tex-Live for the Debian operating system, but it fails 
me.

For one thing, I also installed AUCTeX by means of ELPA. However, it 
does not load when emacs opens a .tex file. In order for AUCTeX to load 
I have to put this line nto my .emacs  file: (load "auctex.el" nil t t)

Another problem is that when I try to process a .tex file I get the 
error:

  ERROR: Font \TU/lmr/m/n/12=[lmroman12-regular]:+tlig; at 12pt not
  loadable: metric data not found or bad.

I understand this to mean that lmroman font is not present. I thougnt 
it was built into LaTeX and is the default font for lualatex.
