With more tokens 

\edef\z{666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666}

in place of \edef\z{666}

the effect is more pronounced: 10% or more

etex from TL 2019: 17.5s

etex from pretest : 19.5s


for 2.8GHz CPU
