    With todays update the xindex.lua is in the wrong directory.
    Instead of /texmf-dist/tex/luatex/xindex/ it should be in
    /texmf-dist/scripts/xindex/, where now the former version

Hi Herbert - sorry, but as far as I can see it is in scripts/xindex:

tug$ pwd
../texmf-dist

tug$ ls -l tex/luatex/xindex/xindex.lua
ls: cannot access tex/luatex/xindex/xindex.lua: No such file or directory

tug$ ls -l scripts/xindex/xindex.lua
-rwxrwxr-x 1 karl root 5197 Jun 13 19:53 scripts/xindex/xindex.lua*

And that is the same as what is on CTAN:
tug$ ls -l .../CTAN/indexing/xindex/scripts/xindex.lua 
-rwxrwxr-x 1 root root 5197 Jun 13 19:53 /home/ftp/mirror/rsync.tex.ac.uk/CTAN/indexing/xindex/scripts/xindex.lua*
