update noto package texlive - tar argument list too long

I am trying to update my texlive installation, which fails at the package noto. It bails on a tar with an argument list of 2.900.000 characters, almost. I tried using gnutar, bsdtar, no luck. This is on a mac running latest MacOS and latest MacTeX installation.

Any ideas how to get around this? Removing noto crashes on the same problem (no trying to tar it all into a backup).

thanks Michiel
