I think you are right.

export PDFVIEWER=/usr/bin/evince
% texdoc auto-pst-pdf             
! SyncTeX Error : No file?

When I use /usr/bin/atril as pdf viewer then there is no error message.

My system is Fedora 29 and evince is 3.30.2-2.
