Before I ask anything else, I wonder ... so the actual filenames of some
of the images (like, hundreds or thousands?) are "something.fmt"?

Can you easily run a test using "something.else" instead?

.fmt in our world means the precompiled TeX format files (latex.fmt,
etc.). I'm wondering if the definitions relating to searching for our
.fmt files is interacting with searching for random input files named
foo.fmt.  --thanks, karl.
