If you're using LaTeX, install your files at

  /usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/tex/latex

or in a dedicated sub-directory

  /usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/tex/latex/my_personal_macros
  
and run

  mktexlsr

in order to update the filename database.
