[tex-live] Compilation broken after upgrading to basictex 2017

Compilation using pdflatex consistently fails the same way (the precise
font is irrelevant):

kpathsea: Running mktexpk --mfmode / --bdpi 600 --mag 1+0/600 --dpi 600
eccc1000
mktexpk: /usr/local/texlive/2017basic/texmf-dist/web2c/mktexdir
./texlive/2017basic/texmf-var/fonts/pk/ljfour/jknappen/ec failed.
kpathsea: Appending font creation commands to missfont.log.

!pdfTeX error: latex (file eccc1000): Font eccc1000 at 600 not found
 ==> Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced!

Moreover I find the whole subtree
`texlive/2017basic/texmf-var/fonts/pk/...' in the directory where I
compiled.
