If you're referring to UTF-8 chars being shown as binary bytes, that's
an actual bug (apparently in less), that there's some hope of dealing
with in texdoc, eventually. 

Meanwhile, I believe a workaround is to set the LESSCHARSET envvar to
"utf-8" (no quotes). Or, I imagine, using a different $PAGER. Although
the less man page claims it does the right thing, actual experience is,
um, at variance :). --best, karl.
