Hi Liviu,
> I'm convinced you are right, but, on the other hand, if you look at the MacPorts install scripts, they are **very** complicated, beyond normal user comprehension.
I don't know where this script is, but I also have no intention
to fix up bad scripts for OSs I don't use ;-)

Why What? You asked to install all of TeX Live, and you got all
of TeX Live. Yes, that is it.

You could have read the installation document that describes all the options?
Normally reading documentation if one does not understand something helps.

Yes, TEXMFVAR and TEXMFCONFIG are normally user specific.

Then install all of TeX Live and stop worrying about it.
> I also have TeX installed in the Debian Docker images I use for the builds. in Docker I Installed texlive-full too (with "apt-get -y install texinfo texlive"), but the result was shorter, about 2 GB if I remember right; I'd be happy to identify the extra packages I selected this time, and remove them.
That is not complete TeX Live, on the Debian side you need to install
texlive-full
to get a similar experience. `texlive' is only a meta-package that installs
the '*-recommended' collections.
> p.s. as a personal remark, the interactive install is definitely not for faint-hearted 'civilians'...
One can use the GUI
install-tl -gui perltk
or for the complete dummy, the wizard:
install-tl -gui wizard
(default on Windows) to get simpler versions.
If you have any suggestion for improvement, we are happy to hear them,
but please be specific! General "I don't like it" etc is not helpful
for improvement.
Thanks
Norbert
