On mac os x, after installing biblatex+biber+logreq I also
get no hang but

$ pdflatex testbiber.tex
[output suppressed]

$ biber testbiber
INFO - This is Biber 2.5
INFO - Logfile is 'testbiber.blg'
INFO - Reading 'testbiber.bcf'
WARN - No data sources defined!

on David's file.
