Hi,

this is just a report of a couple of issues with tl2016 pretest.
I d/l'ed install-tl-unx.tar.gz to install it on a 64-bit Linux system
and did
       ./install-tl -repository ftp://ftp.math.utah.edu/pub/texlive/tlpretest/

(1) After choosing what I wanted installed and telling it to install,
    I got
    Enter command: I
    Installing to: /usr/local/texlive/2016
    Installing [0001/3246, time/total: ??:??/??:??]: 12many [376k]
TLDownload::get_file: response error: 501 Protocol scheme 'ftp' is not supported (for ftp://ftp.math.utah.edu/pub/texlive/tlpretest/archive/12many.tar.xz)
TLUtils::download_file: persistent connection ok, but download failed: ftp://ftp.math.utah.edu/pub/texlive/tlpretest/archive/12many.tar.xz
    TLUtils::download_file: retrying with wget.
TLUtils::download_file: retry with wget succeeded: ftp://ftp.math.utah.edu/pub/texlive/tlpretest/archive/12many.tar.xz
TLDownload::get_file: response error: 501 Attempt to reload LWP/Protocol/ftp.pm aborted.
Compilation failed in require (for ftp://ftp.math.utah.edu/pub/texlive/tlpretest/archive/12many.source.tar.xz)
TLUtils::download_file: persistent connection ok, but download failed: ftp://ftp.math.utah.edu/pub/texlive/tlpretest/archive/12many.source.tar.xz
    TLUtils::download_file: retrying with wget.
TLUtils::download_file: retry with wget succeeded: ftp://ftp.math.utah.edu/pub/texlive/tlpretest/archive/12many.source.tar.xz
TLDownload::get_file: response error: 501 Attempt to reload LWP/Protocol/ftp.pm aborted.

These error messages are not confidence-inspiring.
    Should I expect them?

After leaving it run for a while it got happier (or, at least,
    quieter):
    Installing [0004/3246, time/total: 00:40/25:00:14]: ESIEEcv [137k]
    Installing [0005/3246, time/total: 00:44/23:57:38]: FAQ-en [4971k]
    Installing [0006/3246, time/total: 00:50/04:46:49]: GS1 [1100k]

    This eventually finished.

(2) I tried running updmap-sys and was told there was no such
    command. Looking in /local/texlive/2016/bin/x86_64-linux/
there are a lot of programs, but pdftex is a broken link and
updmap-sys is not there at all.

I'm in the middle of reinstalling (hmmm, I'm beginning to feel like a
m$-windows user), but in case this report is of any interest to
anyone, I thought I'd send it along.

(3) The download speed is very slow. I don't know if
ftp.math.utah.edu throttles its connections or is just very busy,
or something else makes the installation happen very slowly.
But in any case, things are slow. (I'm not complaining, just
    observing and reporting!)

                                Jim
