[tex-live] Xdvi not working

Situation: TeX Live 2016 (MacTeX) on Mac OS X (10.11.5); XQuartz 2.7.9

Running 

    tex ‘story\bye'
    xdvi story

results in a segmentation fault

    Warning: locale not supported by Xlib, locale set to C
    xdvi-xaw 22.87.03 (Xaw toolkit): ../../../texk/xdvik/events.c:4450: Shouldn't happen: Segmentation fault - trying to clean up and aborting ...
    Abort trap: 6

The issue affects all other Xdvi binaries I have on my machine (TL 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015).

On the TeX.SX chat, Joseph Wright told it worked for him, until he upgraded from XQuartz 2.7.8 to 2.7.9.

The release notes of XQuartz 2.7.9 tell that some fixes have been done on libXaw, but I could not gather much about them:

	• libXaw
		• Remove incorrect export of vendorShellClassRec and vendorShellWidgetClass

Maybe some expert can shed light on the matter
