Hi Akira - I'm surprised to read this.  In the original kpathsea, there
is no built-in concept of "texmf tree", let alone a limited number of
them.  That is, the TEXMF variable is not special.  It is all just
strings being expanded.  I guess you must have need to make some rather
radical changes!
