[tex-live] Can't we get the Belleek (free MathTime) fonts to be distributeable?

(It was suggested that I repost this to the Tex Live list from the newsgroup
comp.text.tex ....)

The TeX Belleek fonts are a free replacement for the proprietary
MathTime Times-like math font:

http://www.ctan.org/pkg/belleek
http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/fonts/belleek

Some/many publishers use or have experience with MathTime. It would
really be nice if the free TeX systems came with the Belleek fonts by
default so that we could rely on its availability.

However, it seems that there is a problem with copyright/distribution:

http://www.tug.org/pipermail/tex-live/2007-May/013859.html

which stems not from the Belleek glyphs themselves, but rather from
their metrics, which are the same as that of MathTime.

Can't the TeX community find a way to get a set of distributeable
metrics for Belleek? It seems a shame to come so close after all that
work on the glyphs. Even if we have to deviate from the MathTime
metrics, having something that may typeset slightly differently is
much better than having nothing at all.

Lastly, I would like to know what is tbe best freely available
alternative to Belleek/MathTime. For example, how does mathptmx compare?

Cheers and thanks in a advance,

  Mike Shell
