I was thinking about something similar... I'm no expert, but I cannot
see any potential problem with luatex being a symlink to luatex.luatex
or luatex.luajitex. Maybe it would be a good first try? I have to admit
I'm no Perl expert so it would be difficult to contribute a lot here...
