Dear Dick,
I think that proTeXt and MacTeX are comparable in the sense that both
provide an unaltered TeX system (MacTeX installs TeX Live and proTeXt
installs MiKTeX) and both add some extra tools like Ghostscript.
I don't see any discrepancy in Karl's statement.
