Norbert:  In the meantime, I suggest some small additions to updmap.1
and updmap.cfg.5:

 + explicitly say that updmap[-sys] --syncwithtrees doesn't generate new
   map files

 + explicitly say what --enable [Mixed]Map=... does when the map file is 
   currently #! disabled

This will help users as well as packagers to understand what the
programs do (without having to read the source code).
