Well, TeX Live supports Adobe Helvetica already.  However, updmap is using
URW fonts by default.  After installing the Adobe Type 1 font files
one can configure updmap to use them instead.

The metrics are the same for both fonts and are part of the psnfss
package.  psnfss also provides LaTeX support files.

TeX Gyre is definitely the best choice nowadays.  They support much
more languages and are available as OpenType too.
