If you ran the file by LaTeX and want to switch to XeLaTeX, do not
forget to delete .aux, .toc, .lof and .lot files, they may contain
macros not understood by XeLaTeX. Triple dash etc work if you add
\DefaultFontFeatures{Ligatures=TeX} but I personally prefer to use the
unicode characters directly because I have them on my keyboard.
