Wouldn't it be better to use Xe(La)TeX or Lua(La)TeX and a Unicode
font containing the proper currency symbols? You can do a lot with
traditional 8-bit (La)TeX but if you do not need compatibility with
old files and your texts are not bound to these old programs, I will
certainly suggest to use Unicode-aware tools.
