[tex-live] Problem with updmap?

Howdy,

I thought I sent this out before but I didn't see it come through.

I may have made a mistake with the naming of the original dummy updmap.cfg I placed in $TEXMFHOME/web2c (~/Library/texmf/web2c for MacTeX) for installing fonts in the personal tree. When I run `updmap' I now I do see that updmap.cfg on the list of searched files however it still seems to want to write to $TEXMFSYSVAR/... rather than $TEXMVAR/... (~/Library/texlive/2012/texmf-var/... for MacTeX); that fails because $TEXMFSYSVAR is owned by root for MacTeX.

$ updmap

  /usr/local/texlive/2012/../texmf-local/web2c/updmap.cfg
  /usr/local/texlive/2012/texmf/web2c/updmap.cfg

updmap: Directory "/usr/local/texlive/2012/texmf-var/fonts/map/dvips/updmap" isn't writable:  at /usr/texbin/updmap line 1206.

and

$ updmap --version
