reinstallation is not a solution. as reinhard said, bug reports!
But here it is not clear why and what happens, we are still investigating
where this strange return value of 9 can come from, but we have no
idea.

I forgot one thing ... sorry, can you run once more
	updmap-sys --force --enable Map=mdsymbol.map
and then followed by
	echo $?
(does that work on Windows? ANyone here please suggest the correct thing!)
